Let's Talk Lettering Pens
If your new to hand-lettering then you may be confused about what kinds of pens you should be using. Or what pens work best on certain surfaces. There are SO many pens out there, and after years of experimenting with all sorts of lettering pens I have a handful that I pretty much use ALL the time.

In general, your going to mostly be working with two types: acrylic or water-based and oil-based. For wood signs, you’ll likely work with water based pens. For acrylic surfaces, I tend to prefer acrylic pens but you can also use oil based pens. Oil based pens will tend to be more scratch resistant and water resistant on surface, however they can be tricky to work with and a bit streaky.
You also want to pay attention to tip size on your lettering pens. I always have on hand a variety of sizes from .5mm - 2mm. You’ll want a smaller tips for working on things like place cards or ornaments and larger tips are great for signage.
